Types of KareLink Systems

Fully Wired - A fully wired KareLink emergency call system is the original and most requested emergency call system that we provide. All components in the system communicate and are powered by low voltage wire. Low voltage saves during installation in most cases by eliminating the need for an electrician. All components are "fully supervised" by the system. Fully supervised components are monitored to ensure proper operation. Supervision means that you can trust that the system is working properly. In new building construction, wired systems are preferred and should be specified prior to any walls being finished, so that necessary wiring can be put in easily. For upgrades to pre-existing systems, often the existing wiring can be used either completely or with minimal additional wiring added. Components are powered by low voltage power supplies designed to withstand many times more current draw than is used in normal operation, and backup power is supplied by self-charging backup batteries, preventing the loss of system power. This backup allows time for building staff to appropriately respond and implement contingency solutions in times of extended loss of power.

Fully Wireless - KareLink uses the only proven and reliable wireless devices available. While there are low cost wireless devices available, KareLink will not specify, recommend, sell, or install these. Poorly specified wireless devices will be subject to greater amounts of interference, will not have a good range of use, and worst of all, can not be counted on to function in the event of a life or death emergency. Instead, we opt for the 900 MHz spread spectrum devices. Wireless devices are powered by easily procured non-rechargable lithium batteries, with a typical lifespan of 1 to 4 years, depending on the device. Battery power and signal are monitored by the system, ensuring that everything is operating properly. Wireless systems can often reduce installation expenses in existing facilities. There are additional items needed for the backbone of a wireless network, such as repeaters and locators. These devices are proprietary high-performance wireless network components, and are not compatible with the existing wireless network hardware that your facility may already have.

Hybrid Wired/Wireless - A hybrid system is essentially a wired system with some wireless functionality added in. One possible scenario where this might be desired is a typical assisted living facility, with wired pull cords mounted in the bathroom. There may be some residents who have expressed the need for better access to staff in the event of an emergency. Wireless pendants can be issued to these residents on an individual basis.

Components of a KareLink System

Touchscreen Display - A touchscreen display allows for incredible ease of use of the system software. The monitors footprint on the desktop is amazingly small, especially compared to computers and pager systems used in other systems. With a touchscreen there is no longer need for a keyboard or mouse, as all interaction with the program can be done with the touch of a finger directly on the screen.

Master Control Panel with Pull Cord - This is where KareLink separates itself from the competition. Using programmable circuitry and micro-computers at the room level rather than in a central office, KareLink is able to monitor a large number of devices in each room with minimal wiring. The Master Control Panel (MCP) is either a single or dual gang (depending on physical facility requirements) custom designed and built pull cord box with a micro-computer which communicates back to the main computer. All items in the room connect directly to the MCP. This device is typically installed in the bathroom, as that is the most common location of a fall or need for emergency help. A string extends from the panel to the floor, and when pulled throws a switch. MCP's have a reset button on the panel which is used by staff to cancel the call once they respond, and can be equipped with a status indicator light.

Pull Cord - Additional pull cord boxes can be installed throughout a residence. These additional boxes are wired back to the MCP. All additional boxes are supervised. There is no need for a micro-computer in these additional boxes.

Smoke Alarm - The most commonly added option to an emergency call system, KareLink uses only UL approved low voltage smoke alarms. Smoke alarms are supervised for power and trouble. Any time the smoke alarm detects smoke, the horn will sound and the alarm is also forwarded through the MCP's to the central computer.

Wireless Pendant - Wireless pendants offer the security of a pull cord with the added convenience of being able to travel anywhere with the resident. Pendants transmit supervisory signals to monitor battery power and emergency status. In the event of an emergency, the pendant will transmit multiple signals over multiple frequencies, ensuring successful receipt of the wireless signal. Wireless pendants communicate with repeaters installed throughout the facility.

Magnetic Locks - Magnetic locks, or mag locks, are typically installed in main building entries, and other areas requiring greater security. KareLink is able to regulate when these doors are locked/unlocked, as well as monitor when they are open and closed.

Nurse Call Module - This device is sometimes used when existing emergency call infrastructure is installed in the facility. A simple addition to many systems, this will allow legacy systems to be updated to KareLink.

Handheld Radios - "Emergency Room 201" comes across the radio, automatically. "This is Jim, I'm on floor 2, I'll respond" comes across seconds later, followed in a minute by "I need assistance, bring a wheelchair to room 201". Tina responds, "I'm on my way with a wheelchair." Communication is the most important part of an effective emergency call system. Handheld radios allow staff instant access to emergency alarms. Emergency messages are automatically forwarded via pre-recorded messages directly to the handheld radios. Gone are the days of time consuming delays trying to find who is available to help in an emergency. Now staff is able to communicate and respond quickly.
